India on Wednesday announced the successful flight test of a Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system that would give a big boost to Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability.

The flight test of the next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo was carried out at around 0830 hrs on Wednesday (1 May 2024) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.

Designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), SMART is a canister-based missile system with several advanced features such as two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator, precision inertial navigation etc.

The system carries advanced light-weight torpedo as payload along with parachute-based release system and incorporates several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection and velocity control.

The missile-based system that can launch light-weight torpedoss system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo.

The missile, launched from a ground mobile launcher, has validated all functions.

The Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system has been designed and developed by the DRDO. This missile-based mechanism can launch lightweight torpedoes targeting submarines far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes. It will be deployed for immediate action against enemy submarines.

It can be launched both the coasts and warships, according to the defence ministry.
