South Korean steel giant Posco has hinted at the possibility of shifting out of
Orissa if problems with the project-affected local people persist. Expressing
concern over the deteriorating situation, the company said it is weighing options
to shift the project to some other parts of the country. Recently,
villagers protesting against the Posco project kidnapped some of the company''s
workers. The abducted were, however, released unharmed later. The
board of directors of the fourth largest steel-maker, which reviewed the progress
of its Rs52,000 crore India project yesterday, said it would prefer to shift to
some other place than invite a `bloodbath` in setting up the project, Posco spokesman
Sashank Patnaik said."Posco
had come here to do business and not for creating social disturbance like what
happened at Kalinga Nagar in Orissa`s Jajpur district and Nandigram and Singur
in West Bengal," Patnaik said. Top
Posco officials, however, had expressed their willingness to continue with the
project, taking into consideration assurances from the central government and
Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
