Market leader in Wi-Fi hotspots in India VSNL has announced an expansion of its
International In-roaming service on Wi-Fi with the addition of NTT, Japan. Starhub,
Singapore already utilises VSNL;s Wi-Fi network across India for its customers. VSNL
has been at the forefront of the Wi-Fi industry in India, and presently has the
largest Wi-Fi deployment among domestic ISPs, totalling over 350 hotspots. The
company has drawn up major plans to further enhance its footprint to over 1000
hotspots, bringing high-speed broadband Internet closer to the large Indian travelling
population VSNL''s
hotspots include major domestic and international airports, leading premium star
hotels, educational institutions, sports stadiums, hospitals, chain of restaurants
and coffee shops. It has partnerships with companies like the Taj Group of Hotels,
Le Meridien, Café Coffee Day, Barista, Manipal University, Wockhardt, amongst
others. VSNL
has been driving innovation through hotspots at non-traditional locations such
as Mobile Stores, IT stores, and even railway stations. VSNL
is a member of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), a leading global consortium
of Wi-Fi service providers, and has been a key player in developing the Wireless
market in India. It has drawn up a number of initiatives leveraging the alliance.
Prateek Pashine,
vice president of planning for VSNL''s retail broadband business, said "Over
the next six months, VSNL intends to open up its extensive Wi-Fi network to millions
of customers of international telecom operators, thereby enabling travellers to
India to access high speed wireless broadband zones across key locations in the
top 10 cities in the country. " Operator
members of WBA own and operate over 60,000 Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide and the membership
in WBA enables VSNL to leverage the same.
