Automakers report excellent August sales ahead of festive season news
01 September 2010

Indian automakers reported excellent sales figures for the month of August. Analysts say the up-turn in demand would likely extend into September and October and during the festival season.

Maruti Suzuki posted its highest ever monthly sales figures of 23.6 per cent for August at 104,791 units as against 84,808 vehicles for the like period of 2009. The company, with its aggressive marketing policy, was able to regain its benchmark 50 per cent share of the domestic car market with the launch of six cars, including Alto-K10 and five compressed natural gas (CNG) models across segments.

While sales boomed at home, exports fell 18.4 per cent at 12,117 units from 14,847 units in August last year.

According to the company the compact car A2 segment comprising Alto, Wagon-R, Zen, Swift, Ritz and A-Star grew at 25.7 per cent and sales stood at 65,953 units over August 2009.

The second largest carmaker in the county, Hyundai Motor India posted a 17.21 per cent jump at 28,601 units in its domestic August sales.

HMIL director (marketing and sales) Arvind Saxena said the company was changing its production mix to meet this increased demand in the domestic market.
