Market ends higher: Bank, FMCG, metal stocks gain news

CNBCThe markets ended higher with strong buying seen in frontline stocks. Technology, telecom, FMCG, banking, oil, realty and pharma stocks were among the top gainers. Midcaps and small cap indices were relative underperformers but manged to close in green. Capital goods were under lot of pressure and continued to underperform in today's session.

ICICI Bank, Wipro, SBI were among the top gainers up over 5.5% each. Bharti Airtel, Suzlon, ITC, Wipro, Ranbaxy Labs, Satyam and Tata Communication were other gainers on the bourses while Maruti, BHEL and ABB were top losers.

Sensex closed up 413.96 points or 2.70% at 15757.08, and the Nifty up 114.20 points or 2.46% at 4761.20.

About 1574 shares have advanced, 1116 shares declined, and 381 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,344.72 up 1.3%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,777.94 up 0.8%.

The BSE Bankex closed at 7,904.09 up 4%. IOB, ICICI Bank, Centurion bank, Axis closed in green.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed at 13,465.56 up 1%. Suzlon, Reliance Infra, Siemens, Triveni Engineering closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,433.98 up 1.3%. Apollo Tyres, Escorts, Ashok Leyland, Hind Motors closed higher.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 13,811.56 up 3%. SAIL, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, Jindal Stainless, Hind Zinc closed higher.

The BSE FMCG Index closed up 4% at 2,384.57. Colgate, ITC, Nestle, Dabur ended higher.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 10,550.12 up 2.6%.  BPCL, HPCL, IOC, Reliance Natura, GAIL ended higher.

The BSE IT Index was at 3,748.57 up 1.7%. HCL, Infosys, Tech mahindra, TCS, Tech Mahindra closed higher.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 12015.33 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 32302.8 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4953.14 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 49271.27 crore.

Asian markets were trading firm. Japan's Nikkei gained 0.43% or 57.17 points at 13,350.39. Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 0.25% or 59.85 points at 24,324.48. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted rose 0.83% or 71.60 points at 8,667.94. South Korea's Seoul Composite was up 0.45% or 7.96 points at 1,774.45. However, Singapore's Straits Times was down 0.75% or 23.61 points at 3,131.95.
