Markets ends in green: Banks, cap goods, power outperform news

The markets closed in green amid choppy trades. Indian markets outperformed the Asian peers. On the global front, Asian markets were trading lower, Shanghai is down 5%.

Buying support was seen from banking, capital goods, power, metal, oil stocks. Midcaps and small caps are trading higher with a gain of over 1.5%. Realty, FMCG and auto stocks are under pressure. Market breadth was positive, nearly 3:1.

Top gainers on the bourses were L&T, BHEL, Tata Steel, Tata Power, Tata Communications and SAIL while losers - Grasim, Maruti, M&M, Unitech and Sterlite Industries.

Sensex closed up 202.89 points or 1.30% at 15790.51, and the Nifty up 37.40 points or 0.79% at 4747.05.

About 1821 shares have advanced, 804 shares declined, and 447 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,344.72 up 1.3%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,777.94 up 0.8%.

The BSE Bankex closed at 8,192.26 up 3%. IOB, ICICI Bank, Centurion bank, Axis closed in green.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed at 12,862.47 up 2.7%. Suzlon, Reliance Infra, Siemens, Triveni Engineering closed higher.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 13,778.96 up 2%. SAIL, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, Jindal Stainless, Hind Zinc closed higher.

The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.5% at 2,361.20. The BSE Auto Index closed flat at 4,417.65.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 10,571.03 up 1%.  BPCL, HPCL, IOC, Reliance Natura, GAIL ended higher.

The BSE IT Index was at 3,705.09 up 0.5%. HCL, Infosys, Tech mahindra, TCS, Tech Mahindra closed higher.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 11516.99 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 31113.78 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5318.23 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 47949.0 crore.
