Market ends in green: Cap goods, energy stocks up news

CNBCThe markets closed in green showing resilience to the bad news of inflation After soe initial hicups it ended higher amid volatility. Inflation numbers came in higher than estimates at 7.4%. Analyst were expecting inflation at 7%-7.2% but it came in as a negative surprise at 7.41%. Analyst expect some liquidity measures like CRR hike to curb inflation.

Both the midcap and smallcap indices ended in green. Banking space was trading weak and FMCG index is also trading flat.

Energy, realty, capital goods and select metal stocks closed at higher levels.

Capital goods index was top performer and is up over 3% as BHEL and L&T were the top gainers each up over 4%. Power stocks were looking good with Tata Power up over 4%.

Sensex closed up 112.54 points or 0.72% at 15807.64, and the Nifty up 44.80 points or 0.95% at 4777.80.

About 1670 shares have advanced, 1076 shares declined, and 328 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,523.22 up 0.7%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,081.43 up 0.6%.

The BSE Bankex ended at 7,900.97 down 0.6%. Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Oriental Bank, Allahabad Bank moved downwards.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 3% at 13,267.51. BHEL, L&T, Astra Microwave, BEML, Crompton Greave, Thermax, Greaves Cotton, Areva T&D closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,427.06 up 0.5%. Escorts, TVS Motor, Amtek Auto, Cummins, Punj Tractors, MRF closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 13,966.38 up 1%. Hind Zinc, Sterlite, NALCO, Shree Precoated, Mah Seamless, Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw, JindalStainless closed higher.

The BSE FMCG Index closed down 1.3% at 2,319.36. Colgate, ITC, Bata India, Godrej Consumer, HUL, GlaxoSmith Con closed lower.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 11,028.75 up 3%. GAIL, Reliance Natura, HPCL, RPL,ONGC, Reliance, ONGC ended in green.
 
BSE power index closed at 3,164.39 up 2%. Torrent Power, NTPC, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Power Grid Corp, Crompton Greave ended in green.

The BSE IT Index was down 0.5% at 3,659.38. I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer, Financial Tech, Mphasis, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower.

Asian markets were trading higher. Japan's Nikkei rose 2.11% or 272.98 points at 13,218.28. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.73% or 177.14 points at 24,364.24. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.57% or 50.26 points at 8,879.66. Singapore's Straits Times was up 0.82% or 25.19 points at 3,089.79. South Korea's Seoul Composite added 0.03% or 0.59 points at 1,765.23.
