Knowledge@Wharton, the online management research and business analysis journal of the University of Pennsylvania's prestigious Wharton School, launched its new global site from India, India Knowledge@Wharton (http://www.ikw.in), at a launch function in Mumbai on 1 November 2006.
The new site, which is free and published in English, will include articles that focus on India's growing importance to the global economy.
A product of the internet era, Knowledge@Wharton, which was started in 1999, has over 750,000 registered users in 189 countries that bring it three million page views per month. The journal contains over 2,000 articles and research papers in its database and provides weekly updations.
Speaking at the launch before an audience of business executives and Wharton's Indian alumni, Patrick C Harker, dean, Wharton School, said, "Knowledge@Wharton is widely acknowledged as without a peer in its ability to provide free, timely, in-depth, and targeted business content, enabling the Wharton School to reach a worldwide audience. And by expanding Knowledge@Wharton with our India edition, we hope to continue our unparalleled outreach and contribute to the growth of this vital economy."
Harker also announced the simultaneous availability of India Knowledge@Wharton, on a mobile platform. The mobile platform is the first time ever that the prestigious journal is being made available on cell phones, providing alerts, search, sign-ups, browsing, and eventually the ability to download and listen to podcasts.
"Unlike other similar publications from the US which have an Indian edition with the same content as in other editions, India Knowledge@Wharton carries research on Indian management and business issues for global audiences," says Mukul Pandya, executive director and editor in chief, Knowledge@Wharton, currently in India for the launch.
"The Indian journal is not a reprint edition of material created elsewhere, but is generated exclusively from India on Indian business and economics, and that is what distinguishes the edition from those of others."
Its Mumbai-based editorial team, headed by managing editor Shankar Parmeshawaran, will handle the Indian edition.
Knowledge@Wharton is a free fortnightly online resource that captures knowledge generated at Wharton through such channels as research papers, conferences, books, and interviews with faculty on current business topics, and distributes that knowledge online to a global business audience.
Since its inception in 1999 Knowledge@Wharton has tracked the rise of India as a global economic force through articles, case studies, special sections and exclusive interviews with business leaders. India Knowledge@Wharton.
Articles from the launch edition of India Knowledge@Wharton include an analysis of joint research between Wharton Finance Prof. Franklin Allen and Indian School of Business faculty; exclusive interviews with Indian finance minister P. Chidambaram and Ronojoy Dutta, former CEO of Air Sahara and United Airlines; and a story entitled, "Pedal to the Metal: Challenges of Tata's Corus Takeover."
Apart from the Indian version, Wharton also owns China Knowledge@Wharton in Mandarin and Chinese, the Universia Knowledge@Wharton in Spanish and Portuguese and the original Knowledge@Wharton in English. The journal also includes academic partner sites at Emory and Arizona State Universities.
