Hindustan Motors suspends work at Kolkata plant

Mumbai: Hindustan Motors Ltd has suspended work at its plant in Uttarpara near Kolkata after a group of workers prevented a large number of workers from reporting to work and blockaded movement of material, the company said in a statement.

The largest union at Hindustan Motors went on indefinite strike on March 13 protesting non-payment of salaries for two months and suspension of 15 employees.

Workers have since then staged violent protest and damaged company property, a senior police official said.

Hindustan Motors has informed the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) that further to company management''s letter dated April 02 and 05, 2007 to the five registered trade unions, the law and order situation at Uttarpara continues to be disconcerting. A small group of workers are able to harass 2,100 plus employees reporting for duty and prevent an additional 1,000 plus willing employees from joining duty.

Complete blockade of ingress and egress of material coninues. As a result the management was constrained to declare ''suspension of work''. The company is hopeful that the competent authorities will intervene in restoring law and order in and around the plant, in accordance with the high court order, the statement added.

The Uttarpara plant makes the Ambassador car and auto parts. Hindustan Motors has another plant near Chennai, which rolls out cars in technical collaboration with Japan''s Mitsubishi Motor Corp.
