Two home-grown sports utility vehicles – the new Harrier and Safari models of Tata Motors – have been given 5-star safety ratings in the maiden crash-tests conducted by the newly-established Bharat New Car Assessment Programme vehicle safety assessment programme.

Tata Motors on Tuesday said the latest versions of its Harrier and Safari models have scored five stars in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection in the first-ever BNCAP.

BNCAP will be the first choice for vehicle safety assessment for Indian automobile companies, placing it as the premiere safety performance evaluation protocol in the domestic market, with chances of more manufacturers opting to get their vehicles tested in India.

Speaking on the achievement, union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, said, “Bharat-NCAP is India’s independent, atmanirbhar voice on vehicle safety. It is benchmarked to the best-in-class global standards and the Bharat-NCAP vehicle rating system is designed to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations. I am delighted that the first ever vehicles being certified today with the highest achievable 5-star rating are both from Tata Motors.”

Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, said both the SUVs are built on the OMEGA-ARC platform, which is derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture.

The new Tata Harrier and Safari were awarded five stars by Global NCAP as well. The latest Global NCAP crash test protocols assess frontal and side impact protection along with electronic stability control (ESC), the pedestrian protection and side impact pole protection tests being mandatory to score the highest ratings.

The SUVs are also fitted with seven airbags (six are standard), electronic stability control as standard, 3-point seat belts in all rows, seat-belt reminder for all passengers, ISOFIX tethers, seat belts with retractors, pretensioner load limiters (RPLL) and anchor pretensioners.
