Tata Sumo

Ever since the launch of the Sumo, the multi-utility car segment has never been the same. In overall terms, the Sumo is bigger and better than its rivals the Armada and Tempo Trax. It is powered by the smooth 1948cc unit, which also powers the Estate and the Sierra, and is used in the 207 family of Tata’s light-commercial vehicles.

At cruising speeds, engine noise and vibration are hardly noticeable. The vehicle gives decent ride quality and is the perfect vehicle especially for long-distance driving. The Tata Sumo provides ample interior space and the DX version is a step ahead in terms of fit-and-finish of the body.

The Sumo’s power unit is among the most refined ones. The engine is free-revving and needs to be pushed to the upper regions of its rev-band to extract the maximum from it. The Sumo can be driven at a speed of 110 kmph without feeling stressed.

On outward appearances there is not much difference between the standard Sumo and the deluxe edition. A choice of smart metallic paint shades is available for the DX model. Interior changes are essentially restricted to the front row. The bench arrangement on the standard Sumo is replaced by basic, but comfortable, bucket seats.

The combination of power-assisted steering and tubeless Kumho radials transforms the dynamics of the DX. The vehicle glides over bumpy road, quashing potholes, ruts and speedbreakers.
